The Champions Deliver

Chelsea faced Tottenham away from home at the Webley stadium for their second Premier League match of the season! After losing their first match, there were concerns about the Chelsea squad.

However, those worries were all put to bed by Chelsea’s victory over Spurs! Alonso gave the Blues the lead in the 24th minute of the match. Despite all efforts from the opposition, they held onto this lead until the second half.

Sadly, Chelsea broke down their own advantage when Batshuayi headed in an own goal to equalise for Spurs. At this point, it looked as if both teams would be walking away from the game with one point.

Although, that was quick to change. Alonso worked his magic once again by scoring the winning goal in the 88th minute of the game! Not only did he secure the first three points for the Blues this season, but he also made up for his teammate’s ugly mistake!

Chelsea now seem to be fully growing into this season. With how well they defended against Tottenham and their ability to return from setbacks, we can suspect alot more great things to come this season!

The Battle for Top Four

It is the last day of the Premier League and a huge battle for top four will take place in a few hours. Chelsea and Tottenham have both secured 1st and 2nd position respectively, so it’s left to either Manchester City, Liverpool or Arsenal to make up the numbers.

Manchester City are the most likely club to finish in a Champions League position. They defeated Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Brom this month, moving them up to 3rd place on the table.  They are two points above Liverpool and three points above Arsenal. So, the only possible way that they could fall out of top four is if they lose their final match, against Watford, and Arsenal score 5 goals. This is rather unlikely.

Liverpool also have the fate of top four in their hands. They are currently fourth place on the Premier League table, having won two of their last three matches and drawn the other. To secure their fate, they simply need to win their last game at home against Middlesbrough, a team already relegated. That shouldn’t be too hard.

Arsenal won all four of their Premier League matches this month. However, since they haven’t been consistent throughout the season, they are currently in fifth place and their hopes of top four are sitting in the hands of those above them. Not only do they need to win a tough match against Everton, they also need those above them drop enough points and concede enough goals in order to overtake them.

Arsenal have finished in top four for 20 years in a row! However, this run could come to an end very shortly.

The Premier League is coming to a close and all the action will be happening all at once. Whilst we try to predict what is to come, we must brace ourselves for the unexpected!

CHELSEA UPDATE

The title is very much still Chelsea’s for the taking. Tottenham is crawling up behind them, however, considering the great football the Blues have been able to deliver this season, the trophy is likely to end up in their hands.

It is true that Chelsea finished 10th place on the Premier League table last season. However, that doesn’t seem to have affected the team’s mentality. They have renewed their image by winning matches over and over again.

They won all their Premier League matches in January, except for their 1-1 draw against Liverpool. They also won all their February games, including their 2-0 win against Wolverhampton for the FA Cup quarter finals, except for their 1-1 draw against Burnley. At this point they were still undefeated.

The Blues soured through March without any mishaps, and it was safe to say that they were on a high! However, April wasn’t so soft-hearted.

Both Crystal Palace and Manchester United defeated Chelsea this month, causing the gap between the leaders and second place Totenham to reduce to only four points. With only six more game to play, the pressure is definitely on!

Chelsea are set to face Tottenham for the FA Cup Semi final this weekend and, considering the tension between the two clubs in the Premier League, it might just be the most intense game to be played this year!

Clear Divisions

It appears as if distinctions are being made between the top teams that have the potential to go on to win the Premier League title and the top teams that will just finish somewhere near the top of the table. Here’s why…

After Chelsea’s brilliant 3-1 victory against Manchester City, they continued their winning streak. Diego Costa netted the winning goal for Chelsea in their game against West Brom to secure their ninth successive league win. Chelsea are 3 points ahead of second-place Arsenal, and it seems like no team can stop them (especially with Diego Costa running around)!

After defeating West Ham 5-1, Arsenal went on to destabilise FC Basel in the Champions League. They defeated the opposition 4-1, with a rewarding hat-trick from Pérez! Arsenal continued their celebrations into the weekend, as they defeated Stoke 3-1. This secured their second place position on the Premier League table, keeping them in touching distance of the leaders, Chelsea.

After losing to Bournemouth 4-3 and then drawing 2-2 with West Ham, Liverpool have fallen to third place, six points behind the leaders Chelsea. With the way the Blues are playing, it might prove too difficult to close the gap again.

Manchester City have also had their fair share of disappointments. During their match against Chelsea, the Man City players lashed out at the blue players out of frustration, causing Aguero and Fernandinho to be suspended for a few matches.

This perhaps gives reason as to why City drew 1-1 with Celtic in the Champions League, and lost 4-2 against Leicester City. They are currently sitting fourth on the Premier League table, but with the same 30 points as Liverpool. Their title hopes aren’t over yet, but only if they find a way to recover from their distress.

Now, moving down to sixth place, we find Manchester United. It’s been a tough season for them so far, but they seem to be trying to turn things around. After drawing 1-1 with Everton, they defeated  Zorya Luhansk in the Europa league and Tottenham 1-0 in the Premier League. That’s more like it.

However, we must still be aware of the fact that they’ve still got a lot to make up for. United are six points away from top four and a whopping 13 points behind Chelsea. The Premier League is a long road, and they must continue to prove themselves constantly.

The Premier League top teams are breaking up point by point. They all seem to have progressed in Europe, despite a few recent poor results. However, the Premier League is proving to be a whole different ball game!

Bouncing Blues

Last season was a disaster for Chelsea, but they’ve bounced back better than ever. They hit top of the table the week before last and they are still there now. Here’s why…

Thanks to Diego Costa, Chelsea defeated Middlesbrough 1-0 to achieve their sixth straight win in a row without conceding. This took them to first position on the Premier League table, 9 spots higher than where they finished last year.

They then maintained this lead after defeating Tottenham 2-1 at a Derby game at Stamford Bridge. Although they broke their streak of not conceding, they managed to win three points. That’s the important thing.

Good fortune has befallen the Blues since they’ve been under the management of Conte. The sorrowful fate they suffered under Mourinho is perhaps now being endured by his new team, Manchester United.

Manchester United defeated Feyenoord 4-0 to keep their Europa League hopes alive. However. They couldn’t produce the same result in their weekend Premier League match.

West Ham took the lead against United in the second minute, and the Reds only managed to net one goal to gain a single point from the game. Mourinho got so frustrated that he had to be sent to the stands in the second half of the match! Who knew things were so bad!

Mourinho is doing no better at United than at Chelsea. The Reds are currently sixth position on the Premier League table, 11 points behind the the leaders and eight points away from top four. The Premier League is definitely not theirs this season.

Fortunately, Manchester United was able to get their revenge on West Ham United by defeating them 3-1 in the EFL quarter- final. This is much more than what Arsenal were able to do, as The Gunners lost 0-2 against Southampton.

But, to be fair, Arsenal were not playing their top 11, unlike United. Clearly they have their eyes firmly focused on the Premier League, the league which Manchester United can’t keep up with.

Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool all won their Premier League matches and are chasing down Chelsea’s top spot. Liverpool also defeated Leeds 2-0 in the English Football League!

It’s dog eat dog. All is still to play for and the race for the PL Cup, or any cup for that matter, is no where near over!

WE’VE GONE INTERNATIONAL INSTEAD

Arsenal were successful in their Champions League match on Wednesday. Their victories abroad make it hard to believe that they aren’t the masters of their home ground.

Ludogorets Razgrad scored two goals within the first 15 minutes of the game. Although this was worrying, Arsenal shocked us all with their response to this. Xhaka netted a goal in the 20th minute and Giroud scored the equaliser just before half time. They weren’t going to let the game end the way it started!

As the two teams were level again, all was to play for in the second half. The Gunners made sure that were the team to take advantage of the remaining time, for Giroud netted the winning goal in the 87th minute. Hurrah!

The Gunners have qualified for the last-16 round of the Champions League with two games left to go. Perhaps now they can give a bit more attention to the Premier League.

The Gunners had to face their old rival, Tottenham, for their weekend Premier League match. Although they took the lead when Wimmer netted an own goal in the 42nd minute, they conceded a penalty which put them level with Spurs when it was converted into a goal by Kane. This was irrecoverable.

Arsenal are third on the Premier League table, with a point less than the leaders, Chelsea. Even if they don’t end up winning the title race, maybe they’ll have a Champions League trophy in their hands instead!

All or Nothing

Both Arsenal and Manchester City played Champions League matches which had bulging scorelines. However, only one of them was able to claim victory; whilst the other suffered a merciless defeat.

The best team is worth mentioning first. Arsenal were tremendously successful in their match against Ludogorets Razgrad. A total of six goals were scored by the Gunners (six!), and they could have even scored twice that amount as they had 12 shots on target! Yes, 12!

The first goals came from Sanchez (12′) and Walcott (42′) in the first half; followed by a goal from Oxlade-Chamberlain (46′) and a hat-trick from Ozil (56′, 83′, 87′) in the second half. Every kick of the ball was a step closer to triumph!

It’s a shame that Manchester City were not subject to the same gleeful fate as the Gunners. City was embarrassingly thrashed 4-0 by Barcelona, with Messi scoring a hat-trick and Neymar netting a late goal.

It could be said that City was put at a disadvantage, as Bravo was sent off in the 53rd minute. However, this drawback was not held for too long, for Barcelona were also reduced to ten men when Mathieu was shown a red card 20 minutes later.

Aguero was left on the bench for most of the game, and was only sent onto the field in the 79th minute. Bad move. By then, it was all too late for him to rescue his team. Pity.

Arsenal are now topping group A with 7 points (the same as Paris St Germain) and, luckily, Manchester City is second in their group despite them having 5 less points than Barcelona. Well, they did only lose to the best.

For now, it looks as if all the English teams will progress to the next stage of the Champions League. Even Leicester has been thriving, as they are topping group G with 9 points, and Tottenham is second in group E. Perhaps the time has come for an English team to dominate Europe!

Manchester Mope

Manchester City and Manchester United both underperformed this weekend. At least they kept each other company in their misery.

After Manchester United defeated Zorya Luhansk in the Europa League earlier on in the week, it was thought that their good fortune would continue throughout the week. Sadly, it did not. Manchester United had quite a bland day after drawing 1-1 with Stoke. United took the lead with Martial’s goal in the 69th minute. However, in the 82nd, Allen equalised for the opposing side.

A win never comes easy. Or sometimes, it doesn’t come at all.

Manchester City seem to have learnt this better than any team today, after losing 2-0 to Tottenham. They knew it would be a tough match to win, but perhaps they didn’t know just how hard.

The shock came when Kolarov netted a goal in the 9th minute. This was then joined by Alli’s goal in the 37th. The winners and the losers were chosen before half time!

Manchester United failed to break away from Chelsea on the PL table and, although City remain top, the gap between them and their competitors has minimised. Hopefully, next week, their labours might bear greater fruit.

We Have Chosen A Champion

Chelsea have had little to play for this season- almost nothing at all. They are not fighting for any trophies or any particular position in the Premier League table. However, they begun the month of May by ending the title race!

After losing to Manchester City 0-3, Chelsea bounced back. On April 23, they defeated Bournemouth 4-1, . This might not have meant much, but at least they moved up one place on the PL table.

After ending April on a high note, they carried their positive attitude into May. Tottenham needed to win against Chelsea to continue the race for the title. However, the Blues were not willing to let that happen.

After conceding two goals to Tottenham, it was thought that the game was over. But actually, Chelsea had other plans. The match might not have had the best start, but it didn’t mean that the Blues were about to give up their 26 year run of not losing to Spurs at home.

Chelsea-v-Tottenham (1)

A goal from Cahill and a goal from Hazard destroyed all hope Tottenham had of winning the title this season. The emotion and devastation they felt was so high that Tottenham players constantly battled with  Chelsea players. Stamford bridge was literally a battlefield!

Usually, it is easy to blame Diego Costa for any violent outbursts on the pitch. However, instead, he was the one whose eyes were being dug into by the fingers of a Spurs player! The referee did not send off a single Tottenham player throughout the entirety of the match. Perhaps he felt that they had suffered enough heatache for one day.

Chelsea has had the biggest impact this week than at any other point this season. They did win the Premier League last year, so perhaps they thought it was only right that they chose who the title should go to next. Their choice: Leicester City!

Is All Hope Lost?

From the beginning of the season, Arsenal has showed us who they really are. A fiery, fast-paced team that has all the potencial necessary to lift a cup like that of the Premier League trophy. However, will it be yet another year that they must watch others rejoice?

The Gunners put on quite the performance against Watford, winning 4-0. The fist goal came from Sanchez in the 4th minute; the last was from Walcott in the 90th. They clearly played their best football from the very start to the very end of the game!

However, after this impressive victory, they drew again West Ham. It was a rigorous draw, with three goals being scored by either side, but it is points that Arsenal needs. This result didn’t help them get much closer to Tottenham, not to talk about overtaking Leicester.

The Gunners have performed well. But how well enough? They are 13 points below first place Leicester and about to finish the season below their greatest rival, Tottenham. Do they have any last-minute tricks up their sleeve, or is it time to call it quits?
