City in Ruins

Manchester City, the Premier League leaders, have had a massive change in fortune over the past two week. After a dismaying run of losses they are out of the Champions League, and have not yet been able to officially claim Premier League trophy.

Last week, Manchester City loss 3-0 to Liverpool in the first leg of their quarter finals Champions League match. It was a fantastic display by the Reds, who had already defeated Manchester City in an earlier Premier League match this season. Many were undoubtedly left wondering what the secret was to beating the mighty Manchester team which only Liverpool seemed to know.

It was during the weekend in which many realised there was no secret. The secret was out! Manchester United defeated City too! In a spectacularly derby match, Manchester City had the opportunity to officially claim the PL title by beating their local rivals United. They went 2-0 up in the first half and had many more opportunities to extend their lead.

However, in the second half, the game changed entirely. Two goals from Pogba within the space of two minutes put the teams level! Then a final goal from Smalling in the 69th minute gave United their unexpected and uproar-worthy win! City will most likely still go on to win the Premier League as they are 13 points clear at the top of the table. However, Mourinho was simply not going to let them claim it by beating his team!

The distress at City was worsening, and matters were not made any better by Liverpool in the second leg of the CL match. City began scoring early, with a goal from Jesus in the second minute of the game. They needed to score two more goals to have a chance to progress in the competition. They actually managed to score a second goal before the end of the first half, but it was wrongly disallowed.

Guardiola was so outraged at the officials that he had to be sent to the stands for the second half of the match. This was when things took a turn for the worst. Two goals from Liverpool’s Salah and Firmino meant City has lost yet another match and were out of the Champions League. There was no mercy.

Manchester City must fight on. They will be facing another big team this weekend- Tottenham. If they win, they can put to bed their run of disastrous results and bring themselves closer to claiming the PL trophy. If not… well, let us not even speak of it.

Liverpool Lose Out

Liverpool continue to be one of the strong competitors in the race for top four. However, with the unpredictability of the Premier League, it is never too good to get too comfortable.

The reds have won all their matches since the beginning of 2018, putting pressure on Chelsea to win and stay ahead, and on Arsenal and Tottenham to win and catch up. They even managed to defeat the leaders, Manchester City, who until then had gone unbeaten all season!

However, when it came to playing against the lowest team on the table, Swansea, they just could not manage it. The Reds lost to Swansea 1-0 after conceding a goal from Mawson in the 40th minute.

This was a vital win for Swansea which keeps their hopes of escaping relegation alive. However, for Liverpool, it meant the inability for them to go level with 3rd place Chelsea.

The good thing is that they are still in top four, currently hugging the final fourth spot. However, the competition is fierce and every game matters as much as the last.

Home Run

Manchester City are completely and utterly running away with the title. In fact, they have been performing well in all competitions. At this stage, it would not be surprising if they end up winning more than one trophy at the end of the season.

Man City are sitting at the top of the table with an extremely comfortable 12-point lead. They entered the new year unbeaten in the Premier League and that continued up until their most recent game.

Liverpool was the team to finally break down the leaders, defeating them 4-3 last weekend. Although this result was helpful in raising Liverpool to third place on the Premier table, City’s position was hardly impacted due to the excessive lead they had alreadly accumulated.

This weekend, despite the resilience Newcastle, showed, Manchester City was able to defeat them 3-1 with a hat trick from Agüero. After all, it is hard to keep a compelling team down!

Manchester City are well on there way to being Premier League champions. For now, it does not seem like anyone will be able to truly slow them down.

Devastation and Delight

The Premier League giants played their fourth game of the season this Saturday, with Manchester City and Liverpool actually having to face off against each other. The results of these matches could not have all been forseen.

Liverpool, who had just signed Arsenal’s Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, were battered by Manchester City 5-0. They had conceded two goals in the first half and by the second, when the ex-Arsenal player was put on the pitch, they conceded another three! What a horrendous debut!

Arsenal and Chelsea both won their matches against Bournemouth and Leicester City respectively. After having lost their previous cious match 4-0 to Liverpool, the Gunners begun to repair their reputation with a 3-0 victory. The blue London giants only had to enhance their image with a 2-1 win, with the only goal they conceded being a penalty.

Although London was joyous, the same can not be said for Manchester. City had obtained an amazing win, however, Man United only managed a mere 2-2 draw with Stoke City. Although the team is still in the top two with Manchester City, it won’t be long before other teams put pressure on them. In fact, the Blues, who are now in third place, have already begun to do so.

All But One

Both Manchester United and Liverpool were victorious in their second game of the Premier League season. However, disappointingly, the same could not be said for Arsenal.

Man United defeated Swansea 4-0 to secure their second win of the season. 3 of the goals shockingly came during and after the 80th minute. They kept going until the very end!

Liverpool, although not being able to strengthen their goal difference to the extent that Man United did, secured three points also. One goal by Mané in the 73rd minute of the match claimed a victory for Liverpool over Crystal Palace.

The same 1-0 scoreline was also present in Arsenal’s game but, sadly, for the opposite team. Jesé broke down Arsenal’s defense to score the winning goal for Stoke. It wasn’t a good day for Wenger, the Gunners or the fans.

Everybody is watching Wenger’s team and criticising every match. The pressure is already high and the season has only just begun!

Hope

Liverpool finished fourth place on the Premier League table last season. This meant that they were entered into the qualifying play-offs for the Champions League this season. In order to reach the group stages they must get past Hoffenheim.

Liverpool defeated Hoffenheim 2-1 to increase their chance of competing in Europe. As the Reds played away from home, they have now bagged two away goals which could help them in the second leg.

The win was especially spectacular as they won with less possession. Plus, one of the goals Liverpool claimed was actually an own goal netted by a Hoffenheim player.

Liverpool will play Hoffenheim again, but at Anfield, on the 23rd of August. Let’s hope that their luck is just as good as it was the first time around.

It’s Unpredictable

At the start of every season, there are always a few unexpected, shocking or worrying results. Whilst some teams triumpthed in their first match, it was shocking to see that the current Premier League Champions suffered the worst fate of all.

Chelsea’s first match of the season was against Burnley and, devastatingly, they were down by 3-0 at half time after Cahill was sent off in the 14th minute. This was not what anyone expected to see from the Premier League giants.

Luckily, Morata- the new Chelsea signing- netted a goal for the Blues in the second half, inspiring hope in the team. However, Fàbregas, another Chelsea player, was sent off in the 81st minute. The Champions were down to nine men!

Despite this, David Luiz scored another goal for the Blues but a loss was still scribbled into their fate. Although Conte’s team suffered failure, their ability to score goals when at a disadvantage should open fans up to the great prospects of this season!

It was also a dismal start for Liverpool who drew 3-3 with Watford. At least they managed to secure one point from the game, which is more than can be said for others.

The strongest results actually came from the two Manchester clubs, with Manchester City defeating the newly promoted Brighton 2-0 and Manchester United crushing West Ham 4-0. Whether this is reflective of what’s to come, no one can yet tell.

An unpredictable start to the season can only suggest an unpredictable season with, perhaps, an unpredictable champion. We will all be watching and enjoying the ride!

Top Four Decided

After an action-packed final day of the Premier League, some teams have come out on top! Manchester City and Liverpool have both confirmed their place in the Champions League next season!

Manchester City secured third spot on the PL table with a whopping 0-5 victory over Watford. Kompany gave City the lead in the 5th minute of the game, and from then on the goals just kept coming. His goal was followed by two from Agüero, one from Fernandinho and the last from de Jesus.

Considering that the first four goals came in the first half, City were clearly not leaving anything to chance.

Liverpool on the other hand had to overcome their anxieties before truly dominating their game against Middlesbrough. The referee decided not to give a penalty to Middlesbrough in the first half of the match, which could have ruined Liverpool’s top four chances.

Instead, Liverpool were first to score a goal at the end of the first half. This confidence allowed them to score two more goals in the second half, one from Coutinho and the other from Lallana. The best part about it all was that the home fans were cheering them on all around the stadium!

Arsenal was the unlucky club that missed out by one point. However, they did put up a great final performance. Bellerín gave Arsenal the lead in the 8th minute. Then, when Arsenal went down to ten men after Koscielny received a red card six minutes later, all looked as if it would go down hill.

However, the Gunners simply stepped up to the challenge. Sánchez scored another goal for the club and, even though Arsenal conceded a penalty in the second half, Ramsey ended the game on a high note with a final goal in extra time! The Gunners were glorious!

Although Arsenal’s attempts were in vain, they’ve showed that they are a great club who we can expect great things from next season. It’s the first time in 21 years that they have finished outside the top four. However, this shocking change is perhaps what’s needed to push them to greatness. Just take Chelsea for example.

Chelsea finished tenth place last season and first this season, without the stresses of the Champions League. The Gunners might just find glory next season.

The Battle for Top Four

It is the last day of the Premier League and a huge battle for top four will take place in a few hours. Chelsea and Tottenham have both secured 1st and 2nd position respectively, so it’s left to either Manchester City, Liverpool or Arsenal to make up the numbers.

Manchester City are the most likely club to finish in a Champions League position. They defeated Crystal Palace, Leicester and West Brom this month, moving them up to 3rd place on the table.  They are two points above Liverpool and three points above Arsenal. So, the only possible way that they could fall out of top four is if they lose their final match, against Watford, and Arsenal score 5 goals. This is rather unlikely.

Liverpool also have the fate of top four in their hands. They are currently fourth place on the Premier League table, having won two of their last three matches and drawn the other. To secure their fate, they simply need to win their last game at home against Middlesbrough, a team already relegated. That shouldn’t be too hard.

Arsenal won all four of their Premier League matches this month. However, since they haven’t been consistent throughout the season, they are currently in fifth place and their hopes of top four are sitting in the hands of those above them. Not only do they need to win a tough match against Everton, they also need those above them drop enough points and concede enough goals in order to overtake them.

Arsenal have finished in top four for 20 years in a row! However, this run could come to an end very shortly.

The Premier League is coming to a close and all the action will be happening all at once. Whilst we try to predict what is to come, we must brace ourselves for the unexpected!

LIVERPOOL UPDATE

Despite how Liverpool began 2017, they’ve made substantial progress. It now looks as if they will be finishing this Premier League season in a comfortable spot in top four.

Although Liverpool were able to hold the leaders, Chelsea, to a draw, they faced many losses in the months of January and February. It was almost as if they gave up and found it easier to descend down the table.

However, that all changed the following month. Not only did they hold Manchester City to a draw, but they also defeated Arsenal 3-1. Now that’s more like it!

This April, the Reds have not lost a single match! They are currently sitting at third position on the Premier League table, and it doesn’t look as if they’re willing to budge!
