How the Mighty Have Fallen

Manchester United have lost their first match under the management of Solskjaer after conceding two goals to Paris Saint Germain. The 2-0 defeat was suffered at home, in what was the first leg of the Champions League last 16 round.

Kimpembe netted the first goal for PSG in the 53rd minute and Mbappé doubled their lead in the 60th. United were evidently frustrated and Pogba was sent off with a second yellow card in the 89th minute.

Such a defeat came after United entered the top four on the Premier League table thanks to Chelsea suffering a disgusting 6-0 defeat against Manchester City.

Sterling started City’s run of goals in the fourth minute of the match, and scored the last goal in the 80th. Agüero happily scored a hat trick, with one of the goals being a penalty that was successfully converted in the 56th minute.

The Blues are now down to 6th place on the PL table and Sarri’s managerial position is under question. The worst part is that Chelsea will be facing off against Manchester United on Monday for the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Now that United have broken their unbeaten run, who knows if they will be able to bounce back from it. The demoralisation of the squad could help the distressed Chelsea team.

The Manchester Clubs are on the Rise

Manchester City have risen to the top of the Premier League table, overtaking Liverpool on goal difference, after defeating Arsenal 3-1. Not only did this win help them but, it also allowed Manchester United to overtake the Gunners.

Liverpool have drawn their last two Premier League matches, against Leicester and West Ham, 1-1. This has allowed a formidable Manchester City to sneak up from behind and catch up to them on points.

The crucial takeover happened when City beat Premier League giant, Arsenal. Aguero gave City the lead in the very first minute of the match! Koscielny did manage to equalise for the Gunners ten minutes later, but it was not enough.

Aguero scored two more goals in the 44th and 61st minute to claim a hat trick and a crucial win for his team. Manchester City have now joined Liverpool on 62 points, but are above them with a goal difference of 48 compared to Liverpool’s 41.

The pressure is now on the Reds to keep up with the new table leaders. No team can relate more to this pain than Arsenal. The Gunners had managed to enter the top four after Chelsea lost horribly to Bournemouth (4-0). However, after being defeated by City, the Gunners were left vulnerable.

City did a big favour for their local rivals, United, who took advantage of Arsenal’s loss to rise to fifth place on the Premier League table. In their match against Leicester, a single goal from Rashford in the 9th minute secured the all important three points for United.

Manchester City are set to face Chelsea this weekend. With both teams trying to hang on to their positions at the top of the table and in top four respectively, it will definitely be one to watch.

Tottenham Run Out of Trophy Chances

Tottenham was knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Chelsea and now Crystal Palace has kicked them out of the FA Cup. The only cup that seems to still be in reach is the Champions League trophy.

Crystal Palace defeated Spurs 2-0 to go through to the fifth round of the FA Cup. Wickham have them the lead in the 9th minute and the final goal was a penalty that was converted by Townsend in the 34th.

Chelsea also qualified for the next round after beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-0. After a penalty decision for Sheffield Wednesday was ruled out by VAR, the Blues were awarded a penalty at the other end of the pitch, which Willian netted in the 26th minute.

Teenager Hudson-Odoi then doubled their lead in the 64th minute and Willian scored yet another goal in the 83rd. The Blues seem to have bounced back remarkably well from their recent Premier League defeat against Arsenal.

In fact, Chelsea are now set to face Manchester United in the fifth round, after United defeated Arsenal 3-1 to qualify for the next stage. Ex-Arsebal player, Sanchez was one of the goal scorers.

Manchester City is also still competing for the FA Cup, after they annilated Burnley 5-0. Gabriel Jesus, Bernado Silva, De Bruyne and Aguero were all on the scoresheet along with Long who netted an own goal in the 73rd minute. Ouch.

Tottenham seem to have left many of the top teams to it, abandoning the harsh battle for trophies. At this rate, can we even be sure that they will secure their spot in top four on the Premier League table?

Chelsea Will Face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final

Yesterday, Chelsea played Tottenham in the second leg of the EFL Cup final. Tottenham had won the first leg 1-0, so it was up to the Blues to turn things around.

Kanté netted the first goal for Chelsea in the 27th minute. Hazard then put the Blues 2-0 up by half time. Sarri’s team were smooth-sailing.

However, a goal from Tottenham’s Llorente in the 50th minute put the scoreline on aggregate to 2-2. Penalties had to decide which team would be progressing to the final round.

After Eric Dier and Lucas Moura both missed a penalty for Spurs, the Blues were sent through to the final, winning the penalty shoot-out 4-2!

The absence of Kane and Dele Alli already seems to be having an impact on the Spurs squad. Their only feasible chance at a trophy this football season now seems to be the FA Cup.

Chelsea will play Manchester City in the EFL Cup final on Sunday 24th February. Without a doubt, it is going to be a very difficult match.

Look Behind You

The race for top four has become even more ruthless, with the top teams having to face off against each other. If anything, it has become even harder to tell who will make it and who will not.

Manchester United defeated Brighton 2-1 to reach 44 points on the PL table. The goals from Pogba and Rashford pushed United to fifth place, above Arsenal while Arsenal still had a game in hand.

Arsenal had to win their match against London rivals, Chelsea to keep their top four hopes alive and return to fifth place. So, this is exactly what they did.

Lacazette gave the Gunners the lead in the 14th minute. This was then doubled by Koscielny in the 39th. Chelsea were dominated by the Arsenal squad and could not reply back with a single goal.

This put Arsenal level with Manchester United on 44 points, but above them in goal difference. It then dramatically tightened the gap between Arsenal and Chelsea on the table, reducing the gap to just three points.

Chelsea’s failure to win not only put pressure on them from behind but, they also missed the opportunity to reduce the gap between themselves and Tottenham to just one point. It goes without saying that Sarri was furious.

With this new and improved Manchester United that has come out to play, there are no guarantees on anyone’s position.

It’s All Heating Up Now

The race for top four has become even more intense after a series of losses and victories among the top six clubs.

After Chelsea defeated Newcastle 2-1 with goals from Pedro and Willian, they reached 47 points on the Premier League table.

The Blues are now safely six points within the top four after Arsenal lost to West Ham. It only took a single goal from Rice in the 48th minute to secure the Gunners’ loss.

In fact, Chelsea are only one point away from third place after Tottenham lost to Manchester United. Rashford netted the winning goal in the 44th minute to claim United’s sixth victory under Solskjaer.

United now have the same amount of points as Arsenal and could be competing for a spot in top four. As things stand, top four is anyone’s to gain or lose.

You Have Not Been Missed Mourinho

Manchester United have been on the up since sacking manager José Mourinho. Today they continued their winning run to edge even closer to the top five.

Pogba has been flourishing under Solskjaer. He scored the first two goals against Bournemouth in the 5th and 33rd minute.

Rashford netted United’s third goal near the end of the first half. Although, just before the half time whistle was blown, Aké got a goal back for Bournemouth.

In the second half, within two minutes of Lukaku being subbed into the game he scored the final goal for United. The Reds are now only three points below Arsenal on the Premier League table.

Chelsea, however, are five points above the Gunners after defeating Crystal Palace 1-0. Kanté, assisted by David Luiz, netted the winning goal in the 51st minute.

Manchester City had similar success, recovering from their last two defeats to beat Southampton 3-1. Silva gave City the lead in the 10th minute, but Southampton were still in the game.

Højbjerg equalised for the Saints in the 37th minute. However, a strike from Sterling that bounced off the Southampton goalkeeper and a good kick from Aguero meant that City claimed their second and third goal before half time.

City have now returned to second place on the table, overtaking Tottenham in the race for the title. It is clear that every position on the table is still up for grabs.

Liverpool: The Title is Not Up For Sale This Boxing Day

Liverpool have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table after defeating Newcastle 4-0. Man City have failed to keep up with them, and it looks as if another team is looking to join the race in their place.

Liverpool continued their unbeaten run through their strong victory against Newcastle. Lovren netted the first goal in the 11th minute of the match. Then, within the first few minutes of the second half, Salah converted a penalty to double their lead.

Shaqiri made it three with his goal in the 79th minute and Fabinho made the final addition to the scoreline in 85th. Newcastle were out of their depth, this match was their tenth defeat this season.

Liverpool, however, are now on 51 points, six points clear of Tottenham and five points clear of Manchester City, who were shockingly defeated by Leicester City. Bernardo Silva gave City the lead in the 14th minute and, just five minutes later, Leicester equalised! It was in the last ten minutes of the game that Pereira netted the winner.

The defeat not only left Man City far from top spot on the table but it also allowed Tottenham to join the title race. Spurs have now passed City on the PL table after burying Bournemouth 5-0. Eriksen, Son (2), Lucas Moura and Kane were all goal-scorers.

Arsenal failed to get closer to fallen City after drawing 1-1 with Brighton. In fact, they are now two points below fourth-place Chelsea. Thanks to Hazard, the Blues overcame a confident Watford, winning their match 2-1.

Liverpool almost seem comfortable at the top of the table. However, it is clear that Tottenham are trying to go beyond the race for top four to compete for Liverpool’s top spot!

Liverpool Race Ahead

After some shocking defeats, Liverpool have extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points. At this point, it is their title to lose.

Liverpool defeated Watford 2-0 to reach 48 points on the PL table. Salah and van Dijk were the two goal scorers, netting goals in the 18th and 68th minute respectively.

Manchester City missed their opportunity to close the gap back to a single point after they lost 3-2 to Crystal Palace! Palace came from behind to net two goals within three minutes in the 33rd and 35th minute.

Palace were later awarded a penalty, which was successfully converted by Milivojevic. This meant that even De Bruyne’s late goal for City could not change their fate.

Chelsea also had a rough day after losing 1-0 to Leicester City. Vardy netted the winning goal for Leicester in the 51st minute in spite of how dominant the Blues had been throughout the match.

This allowed Arsenal, who defeated Burnley 3-1, to catch up on points. Aubameyang scored two of the goals for the Gunners and Iwobi netted the last. The only thing keeping the Blues above Arsenal and in the top four is their goal difference.

Manchester United might be in sixth place but they sure are making progress. They played their first match since Mourinho was sacked this weekend and the result was spectacular. In insult to Mourinho, they defeated Cardiff City 5-1. Rashford, Herrera, Martial and Lingard (2) were all involved in the goals.

It is coming to the end of the year and it is clear that for some clubs this Premier League season is heading in a new direction.

Tottenham Get Their Revenge on Arsenal

Tottenham knocked Arsenal out of the Carabao cup by defeating them 2-0. Arsenal had previously defeated Spurs in a Premier League match at the start of the month. However, they failed to replicate that same success today.

Both Son an Alli each scored a goal to get Tottenham through to the English Football League semi finals. In the next round, they will have to face another top London club, Chelsea!

Chelsea made it through to the semi finals after defeating Bournemouth 1-0. Hazard netted the winning goal in the 84th minute of the match.

Manchester City also made it to the next round after winning a penalty shoot out against Leicester City. Sterling missed a penalty, but after 3 Leicester players failed to score theirs, it was pretty easy for City to recover.

Manchester City will face Burton in the semi finals. It will be a match that many will expect City to win. Although, after their game against Leicester went to penalties, it is clear that one can never be too sure.
